2020 Annual Fort Benning Oktoberfest Open to the Public*

Oktoberfest, Fort Benning’s favorite fall tradition, returns to Uchee Creek Friday through Sunday, October 2020. Put on your dancing shoes and enjoy traditional German music (including Sonnenschein Express, Bavarian Yodelers, and the MCoE Band,) authentic German food and brews, games for all ages, pumpkin patch, pontoon boat rides, hayrides, carnival rides (Ferris wheel, tea cups, merry-go-round), a cross country 10K, 5K and a Volksmarch.

This event is fun for the whole family, pet friendly and open to the public! Admission is $5 per person per day for guests 18 and older. Younger guests will not be charged admission but must be accompanied by an adult. Admission fees can be paid in cash or credit. Civilians are reminded they do not have to acquire a post access pass for this event if they use the Highway 165 entrance to Uchee Creek.

This event includes the annual Oktoberfest 10K Cross Country Challenge (with a 5K Family Fun Run and a Volksmarch, details below.) This  challenging 10K course winds deeply into the wooded hills around Uchee Creek. This event is open to the public. Register for $30 at Smith Fitness Center. Registration on site on race day will be $40, starting at 7am. The race starts at 9am.
 

Shuttle service will be available to and from Oktoberfest on post Saturday only. Pets are not permitted on the shuttle.  

Oktoberfest vendors accept only tokens for the purchase of food. Wristbands (for admission) and tokens, $1 each, are available September 16 - October 18 at Building 85 on Barron Avenue, Outdoor Recreation on Gillespie Street, Tickets & Travel inside the Commissary and at Uchee Creek, or you can purchase them at the event. Unused tokens can be redeemed for full value at the event or at MWR HQ on Barron Avenue, Building 85 starting October 28 from 8am-4pm, Monday-Friday.

Admission

Admission is $5 per person per day for guests 18 and older.  Younger guests will not be charged admission but must be accompanied by an adult.

Admission fees can be paid in cash, credit, debit or tokens.

Guests who purchase a wristband in advance can enter the event through the Express Lane. Wristbands and tokens are available September 16 - October 18 at Building 85 on Barron Avenue, Outdoor Recreation on Gillespie Street, Tickets & Travel in the Commissary Mall and Uchee Creek. Tokens are also available on site.

Please note: Those who participate in the 5K/10K run receive a free entry fee on Saturday, October 19 with their race bib. Also, attendees of the 11am Sunday worship service in the Fest Tent are not required to pay an admission fee. On post church leaders will distribute wristbands before the event. Be sure to ask your chapel staff!

Hoist a Stein, Win $500!

Raise a glass of your favorite German brew … and hold it there just as long as you can. You might just win $500! This event, for novice hoisters only, pits men against men and women against women for a chance to win $500 in cash. Open to the public. Participants must be at least 21 years old. MWR employees and their immediate family members are not eligible to participate. The entry fee is $20.

Rules:

• Participants must be 21 or older and must present ID

• The 1L  Hofbrauhaus Freising stein itself weighs approximately 3.5lbs.

• Stein will be filled to 1L lip with water (a coupon for a free fill of beer will be given at registration).

• Stein must be gripped by the handle.

• Thumb may not go on top of the stein handle, it must rest on the other fingers.

• Pinkie finger may be held outside of the handle.

• Arching of the back is allowable, however excessive leaning is unacceptable.

• The stein must be gripped such that the front of the stein faces away from the competitor (the stein can't be gripped sideways).

• Stein must be held out in front of the competitor, not out to the side.

• The arm holding the stein must remain close to parallel with the floor and should be extended straight with very little bending at the elbow.

• The off-hand should remain at the competitor's side and should not be used to support the body.

• An infraction of any rule will result in a strike. After two strikes, the third infraction leads to elimination of the competitor.

• If any amount of beer spills or drips off of the stein, the competitor is eliminated, regardless of the number of previously assigned strikes. During outdoor competitions or humid conditions, judges will differentiate between dripping resulting from condensation and dripping resulting from beer spillage.

• Competitors should not contact any structures, objects or people during the competition.

• Competitors must stand within their personal area and should not move more than is necessary to make adjustments ensuring proper form during the competition.

• Amateurs only. National level competitors are not eligible to participate.

• There will be two prelims Friday evening, three during Saturday, finals will be held Saturday night

Contest will be held at 6:20pm under the Fest Tent, no registration is required.  Show up in your best authentic dress!  Best dirndl will win $500 and best lederhosen will win $500.

Best Yodeler Contest

Contest will be held at 8pm under the Fest Tent, no registration is required.  The best yodeler will go home with $500.  Get some Hofbrauhaus Freising for liquid courage to help show off your yodeling skills. 

All contest are free and open to ages 18+.

Saturday starts at 9am with the annual Oktoberfest 10K Cross Country Challenge sponsored by Kia Autosport Columbus. The dirt route winds deep into the wooded hills around Uchee Creek.

 

The 5K Family Fun Run is a bit more accommodating.

 

These events are open to the public.

 

Register by Oct 18 at Smith Fitness Center. The 10K is $30; the 5K is $10. (The Volksmarch is free. Registration is not required.)

 

Prizes and t-shirts are awarded only to paid participants.

 

Registration on site on race day increases by $10 for each race, starting at 7am. The race starts at 9am. This event also includes a stroller-friendly, dog-friendly Volksmarch, which starts right after the 10K starts. No registration required.

 

After the race, show your bib and receive FREE entry into Oktoberfest (Saturday only).

Guess what, YES! Columbus KIA Autosport is giving away a 2019 KIA Soul at this year's Oktoberfest on Sunday Oct. 20!

(Registration is open to Active Duty U.S. Military ID card holders and their family members, 18 years and older - ONLY.  Employee or family members of Columbus KIA AutoSport or Fort Benning MWR are not eligible. How can I get there?

Use our free MyBaseGuide smart phone app for directions. You do not have to enter Fort Benning or acquire a post access pass for this event. Uchee Creek is easily accessed from 165 in Alabama. We will offer a free shuttle service Saturday to and from select on post locations. No pets allowed on the shuttle. Must show an ID to ride shuttle.

New this year is Lyft!  Lyft will be offering $10 off your ride home from Oktoberfest by using the code OKTOBERFESTMWR19.  This code is only good for your ride leaving Uchee Creek to areas off post.

 

Can we bring coolers/refreshments?

No outside food and beverages are permitted at this event.

 

What kind of food do you serve?

You name it: Schnitzel, Bratwurst, Landjaeger, Meterwurst, Kraut, pretzels and potato salad, chicken, fries, corn dogs, hamburgers, BBQ, turkey legs and much more! Desserts include cookies, cakes, crepes, funnel cakes, kettle corn, candy apples, Italian ice and more. Wash it all down with your favorite brew or a soda.

Why do I need tokens? Do I need money?

For their safety and convenience, our food and beverage vendors only accept tokens. Purchase tokens weekdays at Building 85 Barron Ave, Outdoor Recreation, Tickets n Travel or at Uchee Creek. You can also purchase them on site, using cash, credit or debit. When you say kids’ activities are free, do you mean they’re free?

Actually, yes. They’ll enjoy those inflatable bounce houses, a quad jump, petting zoo, carnival rides, hay rides and the pumpkin patch, arts and crafts and games, and it won’t cost you a dime.

 

And for the big kids?

Adults will enjoy competitions like the annual Dachshund Derby, keg tossing and the stein hoisting contest. You’ll also enjoy free boat rides, carnival rides, entertainment in the fest tent and Biergarten, and lots of dancing. At some point, you might do the chicken dance.

 

What if it rains?

It’s on. Grab a beer and head into the Fest Tent.
