Oktoberfest, Fort Benning’s favorite fall tradition, returns to Uchee Creek Friday, October 15 – Sunday, October 17. Put on your dancing shoes and enjoy traditional German music (including Sonnenschein Express, the MCoE Band and NEW this year – the Queen of Oktoberfest – Manuela Horn), authentic German food and brews, games for all ages.  We will have a pumpkin patch, pontoon boat rides, hayrides, carnival rides (ferris wheel, tea cups, merry-go-round), a 5K Dirndl Dash, 10K Lederhosen Leap, and a Volksmarch.  A mask is required when inside the Activity Center and on the hay rides and pontoon boat rides.

Fun for the whole family, the three day Oktoberfest is free, pet friendly and open to the public! Civilians do not need to acquire a visitor’s pass for this event if using Highway 165 to enter Uchee Creek.

This event includes the annual Oktoberfest 10K Lederhosen Leap (with a 5K Dirndl Dash and a Volksmarch, details below.) This  challenging 10K course winds deeply into the wooded hills around Uchee Creek. This event is open to the public.  More info below. 

Shuttle service will be available Saturday only from various locations on post to the event site. A military ID must be shown to ride and mask must be worn. Pets are not permitted on the shuttle.  

Oktoberfest vendors only accept tokens for the purchase of food.  Avoid waiting in line and pre-purchase your tokens, $1 each, starting September 20 until October 13 at Outdoor Recreation on Gillespie Street, Tickets & Travel inside the Commissary and at Uchee Creek.  NEW this year, you can purchase tokens ONLINE in bundles of $10, $20, and $50 via Webtrac.  Tokens can be picked up Monday - Friday at MWR Headquarters - Building 85, 6850 Barron Avenue. Please ensure that you have your DOD ID Card on hand when picking up your token presales.  Unused tokens can be redeemed for full value at the event or at MWR HQ on Barron Avenue, Building 85 starting October 18 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday-Friday.  You can also purchase tokens at the event.

Hoist a Stein, Win $500!

Raise a glass of your favorite German brew … and hold it there just as long as you can. You might just win $500! This event, for novice hoisters only, pits men against men and women against women for a chance to win $500 in cash. The event is open to the public and there is no entry fee but participants must be at least 21 years old. MWR employees and their immediate family members are not eligible to participate. 

Friday Preliminary Times Registration: 4:30 – 7:40 p.m. Preliminary 1: 7:50 - 8:10 p.m.    
Saturday Preliminary Times

Registration: 3 - 5:30 p.m.

Preliminary 2: 4:30 - 4:50 p.m. Preliminary 3: 5:50 -6:10 p.m.

Finals: 8:40 - 9 p.m.

Rules:

• Participants must be 21 or older and must present ID

• The 1L  Hofbrauhaus Freising stein itself weighs approximately 3.5lbs.

• Stein will be filled to 1L lip with water.

• Stein must be gripped by the handle.

• Thumb may not go on top of the stein handle, it must rest on the other fingers.

• Pinkie finger may be held outside of the handle.

• Arching of the back is allowable, however excessive leaning is unacceptable.

• The stein must be gripped such that the front of the stein faces away from the competitor (the stein can't be gripped sideways).

• Stein must be held out in front of the competitor, not out to the side.

• The arm holding the stein must remain close to parallel with the floor and should be extended straight with very little bending at the elbow.

• The off-hand should remain at the competitor's side and should not be used to support the body.

• An infraction of any rule will result in a strike. After two strikes, the third infraction leads to elimination of the competitor.

• If any amount of water spills or drips off of the stein, the competitor is eliminated, regardless of the number of previously assigned strikes. During outdoor competitions or humid conditions, judges will differentiate between dripping resulting from condensation and dripping resulting from beer spillage.

• Competitors should not contact any structures, objects or people during the competition.

• Competitors must stand within their personal area and should not move more than is necessary to make adjustments ensuring proper form during the competition.

• Amateurs only. National level competitors are not eligible to participate.

• There will be two prelims Friday evening, two during Saturday, finals will be held Saturday night.

• Winner and second place qualifies for the finals on Saturday night.

10K Lederhosen Leap, 5K Dirndl Dash & Volksmarch

Saturday, October 16, starts at 9 a.m. with the annual Oktoberfest 10K Lederhosen Leap followed by the 5K Dirndl Dash at 9:30 a.m. The 10K dirt route winds deep into the wooded hills around Uchee Creek and is NOT stroller friendly.  The 5K Dirndl Dash is a bit more accommodating for strollers and those not able to run on a rough trail.  Each race is limited to the first 300 registered and each runner will receive a finisher medal.  We encourage runners to come dressed in their favorite German attire!

These events are open to the public.

5K: Early registration $15 for 6 and over and $10 for 5 and under (until midnight on October 14 online and noon at Smith Fitness Center, October 15) with a free 5K t-shirt for the first 150 participants.  Late registration increase $5 for each.  

10K: Early registration $30 (until midnight on October 14 online and noon at Smith Fitness Center, October 15) with a free 10K t-shirt for the first 150 participants.   Day of registration increases to $40.

Registration will be available at two locations (Please make sure you are registering for the race you want to run. No refunds will be given):

The Volksmarch will start after the 5K Dirndl Dash at 10 a.m. and is a leisurely stroll around the Uchee Creek Camp grounds.  The Volksmarch ends at noon and once you finish, you will receive a traditional Oktoberfest pin.

Biergarten Entertainment

Sonnenschein Express: An Alpine/Oktoberfest show band, showcasing traditional folk songs and instruments found in the Alpine Region. Their performances include the sounds of the ‘Steirische Harmonika’ (button accordion), the alphorns, ringing cowbells, singing carpenters saw, shoe slapping, wooden laughter and more. In addition, crowd participation is always a big part of the performance!

The Maneuver Center of Excellence (MCoE) Band: Fort Benning’s own award-winning band will perform.

NEW THIS YEAR, The Queen of Oktoberfest Manuela Horn:  Known as the Austrian Amazon, she is a yodeling, dancing, acting comedic force of nature.

We host canine competitions, including the Dachshund Derby and our famous Best Dog Costume.  Sign-up for these events on Saturday at the registration table located in the Biergarten from 10 a.m. - noon.  The Best Dog Costume contest will be held at noon and the Dachshund Derby will be at 1 p.m.

How can I get there?

Use our free MyBaseGuide smart phone app for directions. You do not have to enter Fort Benning or acquire a post access pass for this event. Uchee Creek is easily accessed from 165 in Alabama. We will offer a free shuttle service (mask must be worn) Saturday to and from select on post locations, must show an ID to ride shuttle.  No pets allowed on the shuttle.

Can we bring coolers/refreshments?

No outside food and beverages are permitted at this event.

What kind of food do you serve?

You name it: Schnitzel, Bratwurst, Landjaeger, Meterwurst, Kraut, pretzels and potato salad, chicken, fries, corn dogs, hamburgers, BBQ, turkey legs and much more! Desserts include cookies, cakes, crepes, funnel cakes, kettle corn, candy apples, Italian ice and more. Wash it all down with your favorite brew or a soda.

When you say kids’ activities are free, do you mean they’re free?

Actually, yes. They’ll enjoy those inflatable bounce houses, a quad jump, petting zoo, carnival rides, hay rides and the pumpkin patch, arts and crafts and games, and it won’t cost you a dime.

And for the big kids?

Adults will enjoy competitions like the annual Dachshund Derby, keg tossing and the stein hoisting contest. You’ll also enjoy free boat rides (mask must be worn), carnival rides, entertainment in the Biergarten, and lots of dancing. At some point, you might do the chicken dance.

What if it rains?

It’s on. Grab a beer and head into the Biergarten.

What items are prohibited?

Guns, knives, or weapons of any kind. Outside food or beverages (especially alcohol). Dogs must be on leash at all times. No unaccompanied minor.

Where can I learn more?

You can't. You are already well-armed with all that really matters. You could Google it and prove me wrong, but nothing good could come of that.
