Effective March 31, the Installation Qualified Recycling Program (QRP) will suspend recycling operations on Fort Benning due to the implementation of Health Protection Condition Charlie in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This includes closing the Material Recycling Facility located at building M0298 on Jamestown Rd., removal of the recycling trailers throughout post and suspending all recycling pickups in Fort Benning offices.
Additionally, in an effort to reduce contamination of recyclables and preserve the ability to recycle on Fort Benning, QRP is consolidating recycling dumpsters into one location. On April 1, QRP removed all of the large blue 8 yard recycling dumpsters from various locations around the post and consolidated these containers behind the MWR Car Wash at the commissary. These containers accept hard plastics, paper, cardboard and aluminum cans.
According to the CDC and recycling industry leaders, the COVID 19 virus may live up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to 3 days on plastic and stainless steel. If you are handling material for transport, the safest option would be for you to allow the material to sit for over 3 days to ensure that there is no concern. During all handling of any material, especially during receipt of material, please use PPE appropriately to ensure the safety of you and your team.
As we continue in the war on COVID 19, please stay safe and use caution in all you do. Recycling is a process, just like many other processes, that we can and should still perform. This is not a situation where recycling poses any increased risk over throwing items away. I do realize that we are not able to provide options at this time to make recycling easier for you so any effort on your part is appreciated.
